Much has been discussed in recent months, with regards to, the application of dimmable/switchable ‘smart’ glass technology in automotive applications. Perhaps especially, in light of the recent publication of patent applications by a variety of major technology companies. This highlights both the potential for such technology in these applications, and the shortcomings of all the established technologies variously cited.

What lies behind this, is the seismic shift now taking place across the automotive industry, as the adoption of alternative low emission power-train technologies becomes a dominating issue, and the possibility of autonomous driving edges nearer to reality. In this paper we review automotive applications for dimmable glass, and the wide range of challenges, whilst proposing possible solutions, based upon electrophoretic technology.
