System Engineer

Eindhoven

Fulltime

As a System Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering key foundational technical building blocks of eLstar’s technology. You translate complex and often ambiguous technical challenges into clear system concepts, experiments, models, and development paths. Through deep technical analysis and hands-on experimentation, you provide the insights that shape product architecture and drive critical technology decisions.

In our fast-paced startup environment, requirements are not always fully defined. You are comfortable navigating uncertainty, identifying the most critical technical questions, and creating structure where none yet exists.

You work at the intersection of research, concept development, architecture and engineering, and have a direct impact on the technical direction of the product through close collaboration with engineering colleagues, the CTO and eLstar’s Technical Leadership.

  • Technical experiments - You design and execute experiments that validate hypotheses, reduce technical uncertainty, and guide technology and product decisions.
  • Concept development - You develop system concepts, technical models, and solution approaches that enable the next generation of eLstar technology.
  • System decomposition - You break complex technical challenges into manageable functions, subsystems, interfaces, and deliverable work packages.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration - You work closely with experts in chemistry, materials, electronics, mechanics, and product qualification to solve cross-functional challenges.
  • Architecture support - You contribute to system architecture, technology roadmaps, and technical decision-making throughout product development.

  • At least 5 years of experience as a system engineer in a high-tech multi-disciplinary (including chemistry) environment
  • A Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
    • Strong understanding of the physical, chemical, and electrical processes governing electrophoretic devices.
    • Experience designing electrode structures, including geometry optimization and performance trade-offs.
  • Proven ability in system thinking - You see the whole and the details, including dependencies and system behaviour.
    • Can quickly grasp essence of processes and translate them into a model
    • Ability to decompose complex technical problems into subsystems with clear requirements, specifications, and interfaces.
  • Analytical depth - You design experiments, analyse data, and draw clear conclusions.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex concepts clearly to all levels, form engineer to executive leadership.
  • Curiosity, ownership and a drive to combine technical depth with a system overview.
  • Fluency in English (Dutch is a plus).

  • Ownership - You take accountability for measurable outcomes, not just tasks. You proactively identify issues, align stakeholders, remove roadblocks, and drive progress toward tangible technical and business goals.
  • Conceptual & systems thinker - You can translate ambiguous technical challenges into structured models, requirements, and system architectures. You understand interactions, dependencies, and trade-offs across disciplines.
  • Thrives in Ambiguity - You enjoy tackling problems that do not yet have clear solutions. Rather than waiting for direction, you define the path forward through analysis, experimentation, and collaboration.
  • Analytical, experimentdriven engineer - You thrive on designing and running handson experiments, building prototypes, and working with measurement setups. You complement this with solid theoretical modelling, using data from real tests to uncover root causes and make informed decisions.
  • Strong collaborator - You communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, from engineers and scientists to executive leadership.
  • Project management - You have experience applying project management methodologies.
  • Willingness and availability to travel.
